Transitioning your pet for re-opening phases

ADMIN

Our pets have been affected by the COVID-19 crisis just like we have. For one, pet  cats and dogs have been diagnosed with the virus and displayed respiratory symptoms. Additionally, while we are finding ways to cope with the pandemic stress, pets have anxiety, too. Now that non-essential venues from parks and golf courses to restaurants and malls are open at minimum capacity, it is time for us and our pets to rebound from adversity. Whether you’ve had your pet for years or recently adopted one in the surplus of pet adoptions during the crisis, you most likely have been spending a lot more time at home. In preparation for your pet to experience separation anxiety as you return to work or other activities, consider these tips for keeping your pet comfortable.

HOW TO TRANSITION YOUR PET FOR RE-OPENING

  1. Start leaving now for longer periods of time little by little.
  2. When you leave, turn the TV or radio on.
  3. Make sure your pet has a comfy bed and toys for entertainment.
  4. Invest in an automatic feeder or treat dispenser.
  5. Check out apps or technology that allows you to watch, talk to and give treats to your pet in real-time from afar.
  6. Take your dog for long walks in the morning before work to tire them out for the day.
  7. Go home for your lunch break and spend it with your pet.
  8. Hire a dog walker to visit during work hours.
  9. Bring your pet to somewhere with day boarding where they can feed, walk and take care of your pet while you’re gone.

HOW TO TELL IF YOUR PET HAS ANXIETY

  1. Upset stomach or having more frequent accidents
  2. Destroying things around the house
  3. Not eating
  4. Whining or barking
  5. Chewing and licking a hot spot constantly and possibly causing bleeding

WHAT TO DO IF THESE METHODS AREN’T HELPING

If the anxiety is severe and isn’t calming down from the methods above, Lakeside Animal Hospital can help diagnose and treat the problem through training, therapy or medicine. Lakeside Animal Hospital is offering accommodations, deals and discounts in light of social distancing.
